<image:caption>The Brooklyn Pageant Project brought over 60 free performances to block parties and street festivals throughout Brooklyn for two summers on a wagon that could unfold into a stage. Inspired by the original pageant plays in medieval England which made theater accessible in the public realm, the goal of the project was to build new communities through the shared experience of performance and wonder. The project received grants from the Puffin Foundation and the Brooklyn Arts Council and participated in the New York Fringe Festival.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Monolith</image:title>
<image:caption>Close Encounter - An Interview with Artist Lisa Ward In celebration of the call to explore the known and unknown in our universe (Spaceness), the artist introduced a physical manifestation of one of the most mysterious symbols in the genre of space films: the monolith. An imposing black rectangular form that appears throughout Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film, 2001 Space Odyssey, the monolith has been the subject of many interpretations and heady analysis. Arthur C. Clarke's novel of the same name (which was written as the movie was made) explicitly identifies the monolith as a tool created by an alien race that has been through many stages of evolution, moving from organic forms, through biomechanics, and finally has achieved a state of pure energy. In interviews, Clarke referred to it as "the alien Swiss Army Knife.” Other critics argue that the symbol has been overanalyzed. In his 1968 review of the film “The Monolith and the Message”, Roger Ebert wrote: “But audiences don't like simple answers, I guess; they want the monolith to "stand" for something. Well, it does. It stands for a monolith without an explanation. It's the fact that man can't explain it that makes it interesting. If Kubrick had explained it, perhaps by having some little green men from Mars lower it into place, would that have been more satisfactory? Does everything need an explanation? Some people think so. I wonder how they endure looking at the stars.” If asked, Stanley Kubrick would argue that the monolith carries no intended significance, but is open for individual interpretation. True to the last spoken line in the film, "Its origin and purpose still a total mystery." Photo by Jesse Lortz.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In June of 2016, Alison Jean Cole and Lisa Ward had the great honor of being artists-in-residence at the Petrified Forest National Park in eastern Arizona. Throughout their 3 week stay in the park, the artists installed a bright red touch-tone telephone along different trail systems throughout the park. The phone provided park visitors with a direct line to place a call back in time 220 years to the late triassic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A new welcome billboard erected upon the posts of a long fallen sign on the original road into Green River, Utah. Once a busy route for travelers before the freeway bypassed town, off-ramp chain stores have discouraged travelers from driving into the heart of Green River. The new billboard is one of a series of light installations funded by National Endowment for the Art’s Our Town Grant to pull visitors into the heart of town in support of local businesses. Additional funding from the Oregon Arts Commission. This project was a true collaboration between the City of Green River, individual community members of all ages, and the artist; united under the umbrella of Epicenter’s Rural & Proud Initiative. <image:title>Projects - so small amidst it all</image:title>
<image:caption>Homestead (light) is an ongoing experiment to light a group of abandoned shacks that were constucted as a provision of land ownership under the Small Tract Act of 1938. In various states of decay, the shacks filter light through windows, rafters, and gaps between siding. Left to collapse in the desert, this project seeks to highlight their historical significance - both as a product of the american drive to own land and the failed relationship between landowners and the surrounding desert - by viewing them as lanterns. Whether lit up by the desert sky or artificial light, the illuminated shacks demonstrate the fragility of these man-made structures and their diminutive presence in the vastness of the desert landscape.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Array / High Desert Test Sites - October 2013</image:title>
<image:caption>Array was a performance made up of three primary ingredients: a long array of spinning pinwheels, fireworks, and the desert sky. In the American West, the symbol of the pinwheel is evocative of the windmills of the old west and the wind turbines that dominate growing portions of open space in the new west. As the sun dips below the horizon and the sky gets fancy, the light show began in the distance moving pinwheel by pinwheel towards the audience. In their brief moment of glory, the blazing pinwheels demonstrated the persistence with which we try to harness, mimic and out-shine the natural world, and the (sometimes admirable) futility of our attempts. This incredible time lapse photo was taken by Peter Bohler over the 10 minute duration of the piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Launch Tower was an intervention with an existing wooden structure that was originally built during the Cold War as part of the Green River Launch Complex. The top floor of the 36' tower became an armature for a light box, wrapped in sheets of muslin and lit from the inside with fluorescent lamps. Perched on a promontory, the softly glowing tower was visible from I-70 and the town of Green River below. This project was done as part of a Frontier Fellowship with Epicenter. <image:title>Projects - The Bunker Project: A Mausoleum for the Desert</image:title>
<image:caption>The Bunker Project was a temporary projection and sound installation in a Cold War era bunker located just outside of Green River, Utah. The bunker was built with 12 x 12 wooden beams that were stacked and buried into the side of a hill. The interior space of the bunker is a long, dark corridor 9 feet wide and 100 feet long. The audience was asked to arrive in time to watch the sun set from the top of the bunker. At twilight, visitors were escorted into the bunker in small groups at 4 minute intervals. The tunnel was dimly lit by the projection and intermittent candlelight and filled with sound. This project was done as part of a Frontier Fellowship with Epicenter. <image:title>Projects - Useless - Introductory Film</image:title>
<image:caption>This film was made as an introduction to a mixed media performance called Useless, which explored the ceaseless drive to find human uses for economically useless land. One of the primary areas of focus was the creep of energy infrastructure into previously undeveloped areas of the American west. Useless was presented as part of Project Cityscope's New Structure series in July of 2014. The footage for this introduction was taken east of Rufus, Oregon at the edge of the Columbia River Gorge on a cloudy summer evening with the assistance of Julia Calabrese.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Space Stations</image:title>
<image:caption>The Space Stations are floating viewing pods that offer a glimpse into how we imagine outer space and our place within it. In each pod, video compilations made from a century of film about leaving planet earth show that while technologies in space travel and cinematography have evolved dramatically, our psychological relationship with outer space has remained consistent. The project aims to show these common threads in our cinematic journeys through outer space. The Space Stations were designed and installed for Spaceness, a group show about outer space and the unknown held at the Sou'wester Lodge in Seaview, Washington in February 2015 and again in February 2016.</image:caption>
